The Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
History
On a day in 1960 when a conference on orthostatic dysregulation was being held, topics on circulatory pathology attracted many of attendees there. Among them there were 4 pediatricians including Dr Okuni, a former chair of the board of directors of this society, who strongly felt the importance of understanding of normal and abnormal physiology of the cardiovascular system in children. They finally got together on April 2nd, 1963 and decided to organize a group of people who were interested in this new field and announced it to pediatricians in our country. The first scientific meeting was then held at Nagoya International Hotel on May 17th, 1965 under the chairmanship of Drs Tokuro Nagayama and Yukio Izumi. This is the first step of our Society. This was coincidentally the year when Helen B. Taussig, the mother of pediatric cardiology, served as a president of the American Heart Association. Since then, scientific meetings have been consistently held once a year. In 1977, the Society was named as Japanese Research Group of Pediatric Cardiology and it was again renamed to the current name in 1982 when we became an affiliated scientific society to The Japan Pediatric Society. As an international contribution, we provided a strong background to the 2nd World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, which was organized by Drs Yasuharu Imai and Kazuo Momma and held in Hawaii in 1997.
